BALI’S HIDDEN JEWEL

One of the most wonderful, peculiar surprises of Bali is how you can drive through miles of potholes, hanging electrical wires, and dodgy abandoned buildings, then turn one corner and stumble upon some of the most fabulous waterfront resorts. Don’t be alarmed if you find yourself cruising down one of these back roads - you haven’t misread the directions, you’re simply on the way to discovering one of the best kept secrets of the island.

The Karma Group was founded in Asia and many members of the founding team are based in Bali, so this resort is particularly special. Walking through the doors of Karma Kandara is like entering a haven of rest, far from the rush and noise of town and covered in a blanket of warm salty breezes. The resort hangs off a cliff by the ocean and offers some of the most impressive views of the Indian Ocean that we saw during our entire tour of Bali. The 74 villas are connected by a series of narrow, steep paths brimming with lush bougainvilla that include routes to a spa, restaurant, infinity pool and fabulous beach gondola. The rocky paths are quite narrow, so we suggest skipping the hike and travel in style courtesy of the resort’s buggy instead, stopping to snap scenic pictures along the way while instantly slipping into holiday mood.

The accommodations at Karma Kandara consist of private villas that are ideal for large groups, making it the perfect spot for destination weddings. These villas range in size from 1-5 bedrooms, but each option is still spacious and easy to settle into. Each villa provides access to its own backyard with a bale, comfortable pool chairs and, of course, a gorgeous private pool. We suggest also taking a buggy ride over to the resort’s stunning infinity pool - many couples choose to even host their ceremony on the water! Other brides choose to marry in one of the larger private villas with views of the Indian Ocean all around. We were fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of a wedding in progress during our stay and were amazed at the heavenly backdrop.

After the wedding, your guests may retire to their own private villas to rest while you slip away to your honeymoon suite, but you can all meet up again for an amazing brunch the following morning at Di Mare (the resort’s acclaimed restaurant) while you relive some of the best memories of your island adventures. In the evening, your delicious meals may even be accompanied by an infamous Balinese sunset as you toast to your happiness and enjoy the beginnings of happily ever after.
