our favourite Kiwi
Origins: Mt Manganui, New Zealand
In our favourite candid photographic style with personality and fun, Courtney offers a fresh, love filled take on capturing your wedding day. She is excited by travel adventures and exploring and getting to know people through stories and taking their photograph. If you invite her along she will follow you around the world, perhaps stopping off at the odd market or two along the way, the secret to her heart is coffee.
Based in New Zealand but available for worldwide travel, Courtney's photos have a vivid, bohemian flare that play out like images in a high fashion magazine. We love her attention to detail and passion for capturing in-love couples on the happiest of days. We relished the opportunity to sit down with this travelling photographer (and bride-to-be!) and ask her a few questions about herself and the industry.
When did you first get started in photography? Do you remember any details from your first wedding?
I have only ever really been a photographer, when I left school I was either going to study photography or biology and couldn't decide so I decided to go travelling and take a gap year! I was so inspired by everything I saw and I just fell in love with capturing everything and I have been hooked ever since!
As for my first wedding, it was about 5-6 years ago, I was working in Melbourne as an assistant for big commercial shoots at the time when someone asked me to come along and second shoot on a wedding. I had always thought they were quite cheesy but I went along and I was hooked, there is just so much joy and happiness surrounding the day and I have met the most wonderful people though the industry.
What is your favourite moment of the wedding day?
Just after the couple are married and they walk down the isle, it's always the most amazing moment of pure joy and absolute happiness (and is always extra fun when loads of confetti is involved!) .
What advice would you have for a bride planning her big day?
If you get back to me in a year I can let you know from a brides perspective because I just got engaged! It's going to be very odd for me to be on the other side with planning now. From a photographers point of view I would say pick the vendors you love and just trust them to work their magic!
We're all about featuring fabulous destination weddings. What would be your dream wedding destination to capture?
CUBA!! I visited last year and it was the most magical country, there is just something in the air that makes you feel like anything could happen. Also all the colours, faded buildings and old cars just make that place a photographers dream!
What are some of your favourite spots in New Zealand?
The beaches! It may only be because I live in the North Island but I always feel like our beautiful beaches take a back seat to the mountains (which are still pretty incredible) when people think of NZ but I just love our beaches. There is nothing better than hitting the road for a day with friends to go exploring and find a secluded beach to hang out at Especially almost anywhere in Coromandel!
What are some of your favourite pastimes when not behind the camera?
Travel, travel and travel! It's one of my favourite things, I just love getting out of my comfort zone and exploring new places in the world.
Your dream clients are...
Chilled out brides and grooms who think outside the box and aren't afraid to have a wedding exactly how they want it! You don't want a cake, then don't have a cake! You don't want a white dress then don't do it! At the end of the day it's a massive party with everyone you love in one place, make it exactly how you want it!!
